Labour Force Characteristics
Edmonton’s employment rate remained unchanged in December, at 69.9%. However, employed workers as a whole (Full-time and Part-time) saw an increase of 0.19% over the previous month.  Year over year, Edmonton's unemployment rate dropped 0.7% to 4.6%, clearly outperforming the national average of 7.4%. The Labour Force is now composed of 712,900 people when compared to 682,300 last year. Employment remained unchanged month over month, and fell short of the national growth in employment of 1.2%, although in year over year terms employment grew 2.2%.

Consumer Price Index
In November, both Edmonton and Calgary experienced a deflation of 0.5%, the lowest rates among major city centers in Canada. In year over year terms, Edmonton rose by 3.2%, a bit higher than the national rate of 2.9% but on par with the provincial rate of 3.2%. 

Housing
Year over year showed a 2.3% decline in the number of listings but a 5.5% increase in properties sold in December. In terms of housing prices, the average residential price dropped to an 11 month low in December, promoting a buyer’s market.

Building Permits
The value of building permits has strengthened in the last year. Year over year, the total value of building permits is up 46%, with residential up 36% and non-residential up 73%. These gains amount to a $68 million increase in the total value of building permits, a $37 million increase in residential and a $30 million increase in non-residential.

Airport Passenger Traffic
Total traffic at Edmonton International Airport was 539,364 passengers for the month of December, an increase of 4.2% from last year, and an increase of 6.9% from November. Year-to-date traffic, including domestic, transborder, and international has risen 3.1% thus far. International has been leading the pack with an increase of 34.8% month over month, and 11.2% year over year.
